Title:  The Last Apprentice:  Revenge of the witch [sound recording]

Author:  Joseph Delaney

Collection:  Juvenile Audiobook

I picked this audiobook up because the most recent book in the series seemed pretty popular, but I hadn’t really heard anything about it.  After listening to this first book in the series, its popularity seems warranted.  The opening scene in which Tom’s father negotiates the terms of Tom’s apprenticeship with the Spook sets the tone of shadow and mystery that will prevail throughout the novel.  You see, Spooks aren’t like ordinary people.  Their job is to deal with supernatural elements, like boggarts and witches, that most people prefer to avoid.  As a consequence, the Spooks themselves are strange, solitary figures, shunned by others.  Tom doesn’t really want to become a Spook, but a child with six older brothers has to take what he can get.  However, he is not at all prepared for what that really means or what his life will become if he survives the ordeals ahead of him.  Full of suspense and vivid description, heightened by an excellent performance by Christopher Evan Welch, Delaney provides a tale to raise the hairs on the back of anyone’s neck.
