Virtual Read-Out for Banned Books Week

Here is a neat project, courtesy of an article from School Library Journal, cited below:

Join award-winning—and frequently censored—authors Judy Blume and Lauren Myracle as they take part in the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out, the centerpiece of the only national celebration of the freedom to read.

Myracle has already uploaded a video of her reading from her latest novel, Shine (Amulet, 2011), and Blume’s video discusses the effect that book censorship has on children. Other often challenged authors such as Chris Crutcher, Paolo Bacigalupi, Sarah Dessen, William Joyce, Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Jay Asher have already recorded personal videos for this event and are expected to post them to a special YouTube channel in the coming days.

Readers from across the country and around the world are encouraged to show their support for free speech by uploading their own videos: either a two minute clip of someone reading a banned book or a three-minute description of a local book challenge.
