Banned Books Week Book Discussion on Skype tonight: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Join us Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 4:00 to 5:00 pm at the South Cumberland, LaVale, and Westernport Libraries to discuss the book over Skype with teens at the North Pointe branch library in Hagerstown.

. . . There’ll be snacks.

The One Maryland One Book program brings together people all over the state through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book.  Allegany County Library System and Washington County Free Library want you to be part of that experience.

This year’s book is a teen book called The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  It is the story of Arnold Spirit, a 14-year-old budding cartoonist living on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State.  While light in tone and easy to read, this book tackles some tough issues, issues that may be familiar to families and communities right here in Allegany County.  Is it the same in Washington County?

Can’t attend in person? Call the Westernport Library (301-359-0455) to find out how to join the discussion on Facebook.

For more information about this program, call the Washington Street Library at 301-777-1200.

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week.  BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.
