Disney’s A Christmas Carol [videorecording]

Title:  Disney’s A Christmas Carol [videorecording]

Starring:  Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes, Fionnula Flanagan

Collection:  Movies

I was curious about this movie for a long time but resisted watching it because I am a big fan of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol but not at all a fan of Jim Carrey. I feared that he would make Scrooge silly and ridiculous.  However, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.  The film contains some interesting choices, especially the addition of a long chase scene in which a mouse-sized Scrooge flees in terror from the Ghost of Christmas Future who tries to run him over with a hearse. All the same, filmmaker Robert Zemeckis gives us a version of the Christmas classic that is relatively faithful to Dickens’s text, and Carrey does not take too much comic license with Scrooge.  What is more, Carrey’s portrayal of the Ghost of Christmas Past, always a tough one to bring to life in a way that is even remotely in the spirit (no pun intended) of Dickens’s vision, is particularly well done.  All in all, this is a nice addition to my holiday movie watching experience.
