Based on the novel of the same name by Sebastian Faulks (also available from Allegany County Library System), Birdsong is a story told in two time periods.  The first is 1910 when Stephen Wraysford, a young Englishman, arrives in Amiens, France to learn about new industrial practices and falls desperately in love with Isabelle Azaire, the young wife of his host. Stephen and Isabelle begin an affair that is at once illicit and all-consuming. The second time period occurs years later when Stephen finds himself serving on the Western Front of World War I in the very area where he experienced his great love.  The film moves back and forth between the two times, juxtaposing the horrors that Stephen experiences during the war with the joys he felt during his earlier visits to Amiens.  The later scenes offer hints that something went wrong in his passionate romance, but the audience must wait through most of the film before Stephen himself discovers what and why.  Fans of Brideshead Revisited will certainly want to check this film out.  It shares much the same tone and narrative style as that now-classic film.
