Title:  Inheritance : or, The vault of souls

Author: Christopher Paolini

Collection:  Teen Books

As you will see, I am not a fan of Paolini, despite the fact that I have read all four of the books in this series.  I find that he uses stock characters and elements from high fantasy, like Tolkien, without much originality, but more importantly, he tends to write himself into corners and then throw in some dragon magic or a mysteriously discovered weapon to get him out of them.  All the same, something about his novels compels me to keep reading them.  I like Eragon, and I can’t stop following his tale even with its obvious flaws.  That’s saying a lot when the novels are so lengthy and involve quite an investment in time.  What is more, they make for great summer reading since they are easy to follow and entertaining, if you don’t read them too carefully.  With this final book in the series, I must grudgingly recommend that anyone who likes fantasy, particularly dragon fantasy, should give them a try.  And if you haven’t read any of the previous novels, that’s OK.  Paolini gives a thorough synopsis of all three at the beginning of Inheritance.
