Title: Sleep like a tiger
Author: Mary Logue and illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski
Collection: Childrens EZ Books
In this magical bedtime story, the lyrical narrative echoes a Runaway Bunny–like cadence: “Does everything in the world go to sleep?” the little girl asks. In sincere and imaginative dialogue between a not-at-all sleepy child and understanding parents, the little girl decides “in a cocoon of sheets, a nest of blankets,” she is ready to sleep, warm and strong, just like a tiger.
A 2013 Caldecott Honor Book, recognizing excellence in illustrations of children’s books. “Surrounded with dreamlike images of crowns, ornate patterns and repeated visual motifs, her parents coax her into bed. Using mixed media artwork on wood enhanced with computer illustrations, this is a whimsical story with universal appeal.”
Beautifully illustrated, as noted, Sleep Like a Tiger is a pleasant story which parents will enjoy reading to children who are restless and do not want to go to sleep. I particularly like the parent’s approach when faced with their child who is not ready for bed yet.
