Title:  One cool friend

Author:  Toni Buzzeo ; pictures by David Small

Collection:  Childrens EZ Collection

Elliot, a very proper young man, feels a kinship with the penguins at the aquarium and wants to take one home with him.

One Cool Friend is a 2013 Caldecott Honor Book, an annual award given to recognize excellence in illustrations of children’s books.   “Energetic line and dizzying perspective combine for a rollicking tale of Father, Elliot and a highly improbable pet (or two). Buzzeo’s text, brimming with sly wordplay, earns its perfect counterpoint in Small’s ink, watercolor and pencil illustrations with chilly details and visual jokes that invite many repeated readings.”

Elliot is a boy who is polite, intelligent, and prefers activities away from the excitement of his peers.  When his father takes him to the aquarium, Elliot asks for a penguin.  His father agrees, thinking he means a gift shop stuffed animal. However, what Elliot instead brings home will remind you of Mr. Popper’s Penguins a bit, with a twist.   A perfect story for children who tend to stand out from the crowd.
